Ziyi Zhang's delicate looks belie her toughness. She possesses years of dance and gymnastics training and a staunch insistence to do her own action and martial arts scenes. A fragile child, she was encouraged to dance to gain strength, which she did until age 15 before tiring of it and switching to acting. A Pantene commercial brought her to the attention of renowned Chinese director Zhang Yimou, who cast her in her first major film in 1999, The Road Home. In 2000, she received U.S. acclaim, when director Ang Lee cast her in Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon despite originally intending to cast a Taiwanese actress, and in 2005 she created a stir both in China and Japan by taking the lead role of a young Japanese woman in the adaptation of the bestseller Memoirs of a Geisha.
1. Zhang is her surname. In Chinese, the last name comes first; when Westernized, it is reversed. She has asked the media to go by the Western version.
2. She accumulated years of dance training but ran away from dance school at age 13.
3. Her breakthrough movie, Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon, became one of the most popular foreign films in history, earning four Oscars and $130 million.
