Born into a long line of urban farmers, Wilkinson graduated college with a degree in English and American Literature and first began acting in the mid-1970s working on several British television series. It'd be several decades of consistent work, including roles in Priest (1994) and Sense and Sensibility (1995), before his work as one of six unemployed workers-cum-strippers in The Full Monty (1997) would make his name known to American audiences. One of Britain's most popular character actors, Wilkinson's most memorable and critically acclaimed performances can be found in Shakespeare in Love (1998), The Patriot (2000), In the Bedroom (2001), Normal (2003), Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind (2004), The Exorcism of Emily Rose (2005), Batman Begins (2005) and Michael Clayton (2007).
