Though born in Saint Petersburg, Russia to parents who were national figure-skating celebrities, Yelchin moved to the United States before his first birthday. He attended the Sherman Oaks Center for Enriched Studies in California and began acting at age nine in the independent film A Man is Mostly Water (2000). Some of his earliest credits include A Time for Dancing (2000) and Delivering Milo (2001), but his biggest film recognition came for the role of Bobby Garfield in Hearts in Atlantis (2001). He quietly wowed cable viewers in Showtime's Huff then hit the ground running in 2007 with starring roles in the crime thriller Alpha Dog, the drama Fierce People and his titular role as a wealthy teenager attending a public high school in the dark comedy, Charlie Bartlett.
