American Bingo was originally called “Beano”. It was a game you could find at a country fair during which a dealer would pick numbered disks from a cigar box and players would mark their cards with beans. Players would yell “Beano” if they won. The game can be traced back to 1530, to an Italian Lottery called “Lo Giuoco del Lotto D’Italia,” which can still be played in Italy every Saturday. From Italy, the game travelled to France in the late 1770’s. There it was called “Le Lotto”, and it was played among wealthy Frenchmen. The German version of the game appeared in the 1800’s, and there they used it as a child’s game to help students learn spelling, math and history. The game came to North America in 1929 as “Beano”. A toy salesman from New York renamed the game “Bingo” after he heard someone playing accidently yell “bingo!” when they won instead of “beano!”. A math professor from Columbia was hired to help him increase the number of combinations in the Bingo cards. In 1930, the professor, Carl Leffler, had invented 6,000 different Bingo cards! After that he supposedly went insane.
A priest from Pennsylvania asked the toy salesman, Edwin Lowe, about using Bingo for raising church funds. When people began playing Bingo in church it became increasingly popular. In 1934 approximately 10,000 bingo games were being played weekly and today, more than $90 million are spent on Bingo each week in North America alone! Bingo is the only gambling game that is more popular among women than men, women make up over 70% of players!
